December 2024: We have answers to your most asked questions!

    December 14, 2024

Hello from the UCalgary Admissions and Recruitment Office! We’re excited to share the second edition of our monthly FAQ blog for the 2024-25 academic year. In this series, we’ll address some of the most frequently asked questions we’ve received from prospective students over the past month:

Is it still too late to apply?

Applications for the Fall 2025 intake are now open and will close on March 1, 2025. There's still plenty of time to apply, but we encourage you to apply early! Most admission decisions will be released by mid-February. To begin your application, click here.

I’m not sure what major I should choose. Do you have an open program I can take courses before deciding?

Many students may be unsure on the degree they want to apply for and wish to begin their studies in a program that will allow then to help explore options. We have several degrees that provide flexibility for taking a variety of  courses in helping you explore. They may  sound similar, but there are differences between them.

Read more about the differences between these options here

    1. Multi-Disciplinary Studies
    2. Arts Undeclared
    3. UCalgary Open Studies which includes our University Entrance Program.

How can I track my application status?

Once you’ve submitted your application, you can track the status of your application through the student portal. This portal will show whether documents have been received and when decisions have been made.

If you haven't yet submitted your high school entrance award application, you can do so under the "Finance" section of the portal. Please note that the deadline for award applications is March 1, 2025.

My initial offer of admission is conditional. What conditions do I need to maintain?

All students currently in courses (high school or post-secondary) are admitted conditionally. That means your spot at UCalgary is subject to the conditions outlined in your Student Centre. At a minimum, you must complete all required courses for admission and maintain the competitive admission average. You can view your conditions of admission by clicking on the ‘status’ of your application in your Student Centre.

    • Make sure you read and understand your conditions and the deadlines to meet them.
    • If you’re an international student, you’ll automatically receive a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) if it’s required. You can use your conditional offer of admission letter and your PAL to apply for your study permit. We encourage you to apply for your study permit as soon as possible!
    • If you have any questions about your conditions, check out our conditional admission blog post or contact our team.

I received an offer, what happens to my other program choice?

If you received an offer of admission to your first-choice program, this is the only offer of admission you’ll receive. We recommend you rank your application choices with your most desired program as your first choice.

If you received an offer of admission to your second-choice program, you’ll continue to be considered for your first-choice program, provided there are still spaces available in the program at the time you meet the requirements. In this scenario, you will automatically be re-evaluated each time new grades are received.

Please note that the admission office aims to complete the majority of high school offers by May 2025 and June 2025 for transfer applicants. Learn more about considering your first- and second-choice programs.

My competitive average is within the estimated competitive average. Why didn’t I receive an offer of admission for early admission?

Offers of admission are competitive to UCalgary and are subject to change based on the applicant pool that applies each year and the number of available positions in each program. The admission office regularly publishes updates to our averages as we continue to monitor the applicant pool. For early admission, our first round of offers goes to a smaller number of applicants and the competitive average is often higher than the anticipated admission average. If you do not qualify for the first round, you’ll be automatically reviewed in our next round of admissions once you have new grades to present. The vast majority of applicants will receive their decisions in mid-February once first term results are released.

What if I want to upgrade course and use this course for my admission average?

All courses must be completed by June 30, 2025, to be considered for admission for the fall 2025 intake with final results provided to our office by August 1, 2025. To view all of our dates and deadlines, click here.

It is important to note that the Admission Office aims to make the majority of high school offers by May 2025 and June 2025 for transfer applicants. Courses must be completed before they can be used for admission. If you are completing a course early in the spring but before June 30th, there is a chance the program will be full by the time the course can be used for admission.

What if I want to make changes to my application?

You can change your application choices any time until March 1, 2025, at no additional cost. For detailed instructions on how to update your application, click here.

Does my offer of admission include a scholarship offer?

The University of Calgary offers three types of awards for incoming high school students:

    • Automatic Admission Awards: The President's Admission Scholarship is valued at $5,000 and is given to any student with an admission average of 95% or higher. This award is included in your offer letter if you qualify
    • Prestige Awards: Valued up to $30,400 and many are renewable. These awards are for our high-achieving incoming students and require an additional application that was due December 1, 2024. Notification for these awards will occurring in March 2025
    • High School Entrance Awards: Encompassing 1,100+ awards that vary from $500 to $10,000,these awards consider a range of criteria, such as academic performance, financial need, and extracurricular involvement. To be considered, applicants must complete an application that is due March 1, 2025. Notification for these awards will occur in April 2025

I’m excited to start in the Fall, but have questions about course registration – who can I connect with?

High school course registration will occur on May 26-30, 2025. To get help choosing your first-year classes and building your schedule our New Student Registration Assistance (NSRA) team (available in April) will be available to teach you the skills required to successfully register in classes at the University of Calgary. The University of Calgary, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta (Districts 5 and 6).

The University of Calgary is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina. On this land and in this place we strive to learn together, walk together, and grow together “in a good way.”
