Faculty of Social Work Graduate Certificate Pre Assessment Survey

Completion of this survey is not an application to our program.
    Loading...

Welcome to the Graduate Certificate Pre Assessment Survey. This survey will help you determine if you meet the minimum admission requirements for the Graduate Certificates in Social Work program at UCalgary. Completion of this survey is not an application to our program. To apply you will need to visit the Graduate Certificates in Social Work Apply Now page and follow the process to create a formal application to the program.

This self-assessment survey will give you the opportunity to evaluate your credentials based on the minimum admission requirements to the Certificate program at UCalgary. Even if you satisfy all the minimum admission requirements, this does not guarantee admission to the program. This is a highly competitive program and only a limited number of candidates can be admitted each year.

No information gathered in this survey will be used to evaluate candidates during the admissions process.

I have read and understood the above statements
I have read and understood the above statements
Here are the Graduate Certificate program minimum requirements:
    • A Bachelor of Social Work* (BSW) degree from an accredited/recognized institution. Your final transcript noting your degree must be received by June 30.  We cannot accept a letter of completion as a replacement for a degree being awarded.

      • If you completed your degree outside Canada, you should look up the minimum admission requirements for your country.

    • A minimum of 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 point system, over the past two years of full-time study (a minimum of 60 units) of the undergraduate degree.

      • If you completed your degree outside Canada, look up the grade equivalency for your country.

    • The equivalent of two years of full-time paid work or a minimum of 3,000 hours of paid and/or volunteer work in the human services field by the application deadline. What is relevant social work and human service experience?

    • English Language Proficiency.

*We recognize BSW and BISW degrees accredited by the CASWE, CSWE and international credentials deemed equivalent to a Canadian BSW degree by the CASW

Do you hold a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree from an accredited/recognized institution?

Do you hold a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree from an accredited/recognized institution?

Unfortunately, as a highly competitive graduate-level program, applicants without a 4-year BSW degree do not meet the minimum admission requirements and will not move forward in the review process.

Based on your selection, your current credential does not satisfy the program’s minimum requirements. While you are technically able to submit an application, applications that do not meet all stated requirements will not be considered for admission.

If you feel that you have an exceptional case, you may still submit an application for review during the application cycle.

Thank you for your interest in the Faculty of Social Work programs. You may now exit the survey. You will be taken to a form where you can register for more information about the Bachelor of Social Work program.

Based on your selection, your credential will likely satisfy the program's minimum degree requirement.
Next, we'll consider the minimum admission grade point average (GPA) requirement.

Does your degree meet the minimum grade point average (GPA) for entry? Refer to these specific guidelines on how GPA is calculated. Some institutions may differ.

    NORTH AMERICAN INSTITUTIONS:

    • Calculated on the last two years of the undergraduate degree consisting of a minimum of 60 units (credits), which often equates to 20 courses.

      • Four-point scale: 3.0

      • Percentage: 72%

      • Letter grade: "B"

    INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTIONS:

    • Degrees and grades from international institutions are evaluated for their equivalency to those of the University of Calgary.

    • Do NOT convert grades on a different scale to the four-point scale.

    • Where a Class / Division / Standing is not provided, grade point averages are calculated on the last two years of the bachelor's degree consisting of a minimum of 60 units, which often equates to 20 courses.

    • You can find the minimum grade equivalency for your institution here.

Based on your selection, your credentials do not satisfy the program's minimum GPA requirement.

Applicants who meet all requirements are given priority. It would be difficult to gain admission if your GPA does not meet the minimum requirement. Due to the large number of inquiries we receive, we are not able to do an assessment of your eligibility or GPA prior to submitting an application and paying an application fee. Applicants who have not met all the program requirements are still able to apply; however, their application will be assessed against all others received, and admission would be highly unlikely. If you feel that you have an exceptional case, you may still submit an application for review during the application cycle.

Based on your selection, your credential will likely satisfy the program's minimum GPA requirement.
Next, we will look at your human services field experience.

Will you have the equivalent of two years of full-time paid work or a minimum of 3000 hours of paid and/or volunteer work in the human services field by the application deadline? If you are not sure what is considered human service experience, you may refer to: What is relevant social work and human service experience? The 3000 hours human services field experience can be cumulative over several positions and can span multiple years. This does not have to be limited to post-bachelor’s degree experience. Practicum experience (if you have any) should not be included in calculating these hours.

Based on your selection, you do not have enough human service field experience hours to satisfy the program's minimum experience requirement.

As the program is very popular, and applicants who meet all requirements are given priority, it would be very difficult to gain admission if you do not meet the minimum human services field experience required. Applicants who have not met all the program requirements are still able to apply; however, their application will be assessed against all others received, and admission would be highly unlikely. If you feel that you have an exceptional case, you may still submit an application for review during the application cycle.

Based on your selection, we are unable to determine if your credential satisfies the program's experience requirement.

However, if you are not sure whether your past experience is considered human services but feel that what you did previously should be considered, you can make a case by providing the connection explicitly in your resume. For example, why and how the social interactions associated with your previous work/volunteer experience relate to social work.

Student advisors are unable to comment whether a certain position is in the human services field. You must submit a full application for evaluation.

Next, we will look at English Language Proficiency.

Next, we will look at English Language Proficiency.

English is the official language of instruction at UCalgary. We follow the Faculty of Graduate Studies policy for English Language Proficiency (ELP), and we are a Level 1 program. All applicants need to submit ELP test scores, unless they have completed a bachelor's degree or equivalent from a recognized institution that teaches in English in an eligible country. List of eligible countries. In certain circumstances, you may request to waive the English Language Proficiency requirement if your institution's country is not listed. Eligible institutions must be listed as providing English language instruction in the World Higher Education Database (WHED).

The University of Calgary, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta (Districts 5 and 6).

The University of Calgary is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina. On this land and in this place we strive to learn together, walk together, and grow together “in a good way.”
