A Quick Guide to U.S. Student Loans at the University of Calgary

So, you’re thinking about studying at the University of Calgary, eh? That’s exciting! Whether you’re drawn to Calgary’s stunning landscape, its welcoming community, or the opportunities that await you here, we know that financing your education abroad can be a big question mark. Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered. Here’s everything you need to know about U.S. student loans and the funding options available to make your dream of studying in Canada a reality.

    Funding Options for U.S. Students

As a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, you’re eligible for a variety of financial resources to help fund your studies at UCalgary. Here’s an overview of the key options:

    1. William D. Ford Federal Direct Loans
The William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan program is one of the most straightforward options for U.S. students. Here are the different types:

    • Direct Subsidized Loans: Available for undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need. These loans can help cover tuition, living costs, and more.

    • Direct Unsubsidized Loans: Available to undergraduate students, regardless of financial need. This gives you more flexibility, so you can use the funds for a range of expenses.

    • Parent PLUS Loans: These loans are for parents of dependent undergraduate students, helping cover additional educational costs.

Although UCalgary can’t disburse U.S. Pell Grants (a restriction that applies to all foreign schools), the Direct Loan programs are still a great option to get your funding in place.

For Dual Citizens: Exploring the Canada Student Loans Program

If you’re a dual citizen of both the U.S. and Canada, you’re in an excellent position. Before diving straight into U.S. federal loans, take a moment to consider the Canada Student Loans program. As a Canadian citizen, you might find more favorable terms and a cost-effective way to fund your education. This could be a great option to explore if you want to maximize your financial aid opportunities.

Other Loan Options You Might Consider

If federal loans don’t cover all your expenses—or if you just need a bit of extra support—there are a couple of private loan options to keep in mind:

Sallie Mae: If you find you need more funding than your federal loans provide, Sallie Mae offers flexible private loan options with customizable terms.

Earnest: Known for its simplicity and competitive rates, Earnest offers private loans with personalized service, so you can feel supported throughout the process.

These private lenders can help fill in the gaps if federal loans alone won’t cover everything.

How to Apply and Get the Support You Need

We know the application process can be overwhelming, but don’t worry—we’re here to help. If you have questions about the loan process or how much you can borrow, the UCalgary U.S. Loans team is ready to guide you every step of the way. Reach out to them at usloans[at]ucalgary.ca for support tailored to your specific needs.

The University of Calgary, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta (Districts 5 and 6).

The University of Calgary is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina. On this land and in this place we strive to learn together, walk together, and grow together “in a good way.”
