    What is this appointment for?

Book this type of appointment if you have any questions concerning a letter of permission.

Letters of permission are required when you are taking courses at a different institution while enrolled in an Undergraduate program at the University of Calgary. You will need a letter of permission to transfer the credit to the University of Calgary.

Should I book an appointment or call?

These appointment types are usually quick, so it would be best to give a call during our business hours at 403-210-7625.

Book this type of appointment if you need assistance requesting a letter of permission (LOP), want to learn about how they are processed or have any other questions related to letters of permission. Before booking, we invite you to visit our letter of permission webpage and read the FAQs below:

Q: What is a letter of permission?
A: A letter of permission is required for students in good academic standing at UCalgary that wish to take courses at another institution to proceed.

Q: What is the process to submit a letter of permission?
A: Students must apply for a letter of permission before registering at another institution and can request a letter of permission through their student centre.

Before submitting a request, we invite you to:

    • Check the Transfer Credit Search Tool to verify if credit is transferrable.
      • If a course has not been assessed by our team of evaluators check with one of your faculty advisors to obtain permission and to check the courses transfer eligibility
    • Meet with one of your faculty advisors to be certain that courses taken at another institution will apply toward your degree program and that you have full permission of your faculty to take the courses before starting them.
    Please note:
    • Students must have 18 units of courses completed before they can apply for a letter of permission.
    • Students on academic probation will not be granted a letter of permission except under special circumstances - exceptions require approval of the associate dean.
    • If you do not first request permission before taking a course at another post-secondary institution it may be cause for transfer credit denial, or in some circumstances a required to withdraw ruling.
Q: I've completed courses that were approved from an LOP. What are the next steps?
A: After courses are completed, for credit to be transferred, a student must arrange for their official final transcript to be sent to the UCalgary Admissions Office. Official transcripts are accepted in the following three ways:
    • Mail - have transcripts sent in a sealed envelope to University of Calgary - HNSC 2nd floor, 2500 University Drive NW
    • Secure file transfer site - MyCreds, Parchment, etc. you can ask your school if they're affiliated with any such sites for transcript file sharing.
    • Email - the easiest and fastest way to have transcripts sent our way! Please have transcripts sent to transcripts@ucalgary.ca (transcripts cannot be sent by the student, and must be sent directly from the issuing institution to be considered official).

Please note that grades from transfer courses are not included in the GPA calculation used in the annual academic review or the calculation of the Dean’s List

The University of Calgary, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta (Districts 5 and 6).

The University of Calgary is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina. On this land and in this place we strive to learn together, walk together, and grow together “in a good way.”
