Yeehaw, Future Dinos! Why the Calgary Stampede is a Must-See for UCalgary Students

Every summer, Calgary comes alive with the unmistakable energy of the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth — the Calgary Stampede! For over 100 years, this iconic rodeo and festival has been at the heart of the city’s identity, blending tradition, community, and non-stop entertainment for 10 jam-packed days. Whether you're a born-and-raised Calgarian or a brand new face in town, the Stampede is an experience you absolutely don’t want to miss.

So what makes the Calgary Stampede so legendary? It’s a little bit of everything. Picture this: thrilling chuckwagon races, a bustling midway filled with games and wild food creations (ever tried deep-fried Oreos or a pickle pizza?), adrenaline-pumping rodeo events, and nightly concerts from top artists across every genre. And beyond the midway lights and country tunes, the Stampede is also a celebration of Indigenous culture, local agriculture, and the deep-rooted Western heritage that built Calgary into what it is today.

But here’s the best part — the University of Calgary is right at the heart of it all.

Every July, UCalgary students, staff, alumni, and our beloved mascot Rex join the city’s biggest celebration by taking part in the world-famous Stampede Parade. It’s one of the Stampede’s most cherished traditions, with families waving from the sidewalks, kids reaching out for high-fives from Rex, and crowds cheering as our UCalgary float rolls by. It’s a moment that reminds us all what it means to be part of a campus that’s deeply connected to the community around it.

For future Dinos, it’s more than just a fun day out — it’s a taste of what life in Calgary is all about. Our campus isn’t an isolated bubble; it’s part of a city that celebrates its people, its history, and its bright future. During Stampede week, you’ll find UCalgary spirit everywhere, from students volunteering at community pancake breakfasts to alumni hosting events and gatherings. It’s a time when the whole city comes together, and as a UCalgary student, you’re right in the middle of the action.

Thinking about choosing the University of Calgary? Know that you’re not just picking a school — you’re joining a city that’s ready to cheer you on, whether you’re walking across the stage at convocation or dancing at the Stampede grounds. There’s a reason we say #StartSomething here: because at UCalgary, you’re surrounded by a community that’s always celebrating what makes you, you.

So grab your cowboy hat, practice your “yeehaw,” and get ready to experience the Calgary Stampede like a true Dino. We’ll save you a spot at the parade!

The University of Calgary, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta (Districts 5 and 6).

The University of Calgary is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina. On this land and in this place we strive to learn together, walk together, and grow together “in a good way.”
