Come check out the observatory and expand your knowledge on the universe! .png) 50 years ago, the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory began their journey of research, science education, and dark skies advocacy. The purpose is to act as a research facility for UCalgary and a public education institution to better support science education in Alberta. The observatory is the perfect place to immerse yourself in an environment with research grade telescopes and technology, as well as opportunities to engage with scientists. Students, teachers, community members, and anyone with an interest in STEM are welcome to explore the observatory and learn more about the universe! At UCalgary, our Astrophysics program integrates experiential learning experiences at the observatory. Being the largest of its kind in Canada, the observatory is highly incorporated into teaching, making our undergraduate Astrophysics program the top in the country. During your studies, you will work to solve problems in your classes, tutorials, labs, and at the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory. Students will engage in hands-on learning such as measuring the physical size of an asteroid and planetary nebula! This program provides students with experience in experimental work, conducting observations, and strong problem-solving skills. At our university, students and staff are highly involved in research at the facility and publish images, papers, and articles featuring some of their amazing work! The Rothney Astrophysical Observatory is also committed to supporting and engaging with the local community. With light pollution threatening wildlife, plants, insects, and human well being, the observatory works closely with partners to advocate for dark and quiet skies in our communities to protect the wilderness! The observatory also features Traditional Indigenous Sky Stories which has guided the relationships individuals have with the natural world! Canada’s Indigenous Peoples have used the sky as guidance and identity by making sense of shapes, patterns, and movements of the stars. The patterns of stars we see at nights were given meaning in the form of stories and symbols, known as constellations! The observatory recognizes the importance of using its platform as a resource to educate school children, teachers, and groups within the community. Throughout the year, they offer educational programs for tour groups, young students, and youth groups interested in science. The observatory is a great resource for students to learn more about science education in Alberta and to fuel the next generation of future scientists!
