A Quick Guide for Out of Province Financial Support at UCalgary

Are you a prospective student from outside Alberta considering the University of Calgary for your undergraduate studies? Moving to a new province for school is an exciting adventure, but figuring out student financial aid can feel overwhelming. Don't worry—we've got your back! This guide will help you understand how to apply for out-of-province student loans, explore UCalgary funding options, and make your transition to Calgary as smooth as possible. Let’s dive in!

    Understanding Out-of-Province Student Loans

If you're coming to UCalgary from another Canadian province or territory, your student loans and grants will be handled by your home province’s financial aid program. Each province has its own loan system, eligibility requirements, and deadlines, so it's important to know where to apply and what support is available.

    Determine Your Loan Application Province

As a general rule, your loan application goes through the province or territory where you last lived for at least 12 consecutive months without being a full-time post-secondary student.

For example, if you're moving from Vancouver to Calgary for your studies, you'll need to apply through StudentAid BC. Ontario residents would apply through the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP).

It's important to note that each province has its own loan and grant programs, so be sure to check the specific application deadlines and requirements well in advance!

    What Financial Aid Covers

Student financial aid is designed to cover various aspects of your educational expenses. When you apply for a student loan, the government assesses your financial need based on several factors:

    1. Tuition & Fees: The cost of your program at UCalgary.

    2. Living Expenses: Rent, food, and utilities while living in Calgary.

    3. Books & Supplies: Textbooks, course materials, and technology needs.

    4. Travel Costs: Some provinces provide funding for transportation back home.

    5. Additional Support: If you have dependents, a disability, or other special circumstances, extra funding may be available.

    Loans vs. Grants and Bursaries

Not all financial aid is the same! Here’s a quick breakdown:

    • Student Loans: Money Provided to cover educational expenses and must be paid back after graduation.

    • Grants & Bursaries: Financial assistance based on need or merit and is yours to keep!

When you apply for a student loan, your eligibility for grants and bursaries is typically assessed automatically. This means you don't need to submit separate applications for these forms of aid.

    Explore UCalgary Scholarships and Awards

On top of government loans and grants, UCalgary offers generous scholarships, bursaries, and awards for incoming students!

    • High School Entrance Awards: These awards recognize a mix of academic achievement, financial need, and extracurricular involvement. Some are even specific to your high school’s location. Just submit one application, and you’ll be automatically considered for all relevant awards—easy peasy!

    • Prestige Awards: If you’re the type who goes above and beyond, these top-tier awards are for you. They’re for future students who not only excel academically but also shine in leadership, volunteer work, or unique accomplishments.

    • Automatic Entrance Awards: No extra effort needed! Simply apply for admission, and you’ll be automatically considered for select scholarships, like the prestigious President’s Admission Scholarship.

The University of Calgary, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta (Districts 5 and 6).

The University of Calgary is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina. On this land and in this place we strive to learn together, walk together, and grow together “in a good way.”
