    Racheal, Biological Science Student

Meet Racheal: My Most Memorable Experience as a UCalgary Student!

My Journey at the University of Calgary

From a young age, I was captivated by the mysteries of research, a passion that led me to the prestigious University of Calgary, renowned for its cutting-edge research. Stepping onto the campus for the first time was like walking into a dream. The reality of my ambition unfolding before my eyes was nothing short of exhilarating.

    Diving into Biological Science

I am currently in my second year, pursuing a degree in Biological Sciences. I chose this program because of my deep interest in understanding the complexities of life at the molecular level. As the school encourages us to start something new, I decided to take on the challenge of learning a new language. One of the most memorable classes I’ve taken was my first Chinese class, Chinese 205; Beginner’s Chinese. This class not only taught me the language but also immersed me in Chinese culture through a variety of in-class and campus events. The highlight of it all was participating in a Chinese speech contest, an experience that was both nerve-wracking and fulfilling. I was so pleased with my experience in Chinese 205 that I have continued taking Chinese language courses and I am currently enrolled in Chinese 301.

My professors have played a significant role in my academic growth. They encourage me to engage in extracurricular activities and always post information about various events happening on campus, that they deem will be of benefit to us. This holistic approach to education has helped me develop a well-rounded skill set.

    Campus Life

The University of Calgary boasts a vibrant campus life. Among my favourite spots are the Faith and Spirituality Centre, where I enjoy quiet lunches and the Energy Environmental and Experimental Learning building, which offers an ideal study environment beyond the library. I’ve immersed myself in numerous clubs, including the STEM Art Club, Photography Club and Chinese club. Each club provides unique experiences, opportunities to meet fascinating people and a chance to have some fun. Active Living offers fantastic facilities that have significantly enhanced my school experience. I have gone wall climbing with friends, played various sports in the Jack Simpson Gym and also worked out in the gym, which is equipped with everything I need and more. The floor events organized during my first year, by my Community Ambassador(CA), in residence were particularly memorable, featuring activities like karaoke nights, movie nights, and game nights.

    Personal Growth

Balancing multiple courses, club activities and social life has honed my time management skills to perfection. I have also developed leadership, public speaking and social skills through various campus engagements. One of the most memorable social activity was volunteering as a mascot at the “You at UCalgary” event. Additionally, I also enjoyed ushering during convocation, giving campus tours during Open House and volunteering at the Greeters’ Desk in the Prospective Student Hub.

    University Support

The University of Calgary has a plethora of communities and resources to support students, regardless of their year or degree. The Centre for Career and Personal Developmenthosts workshops on effective study techniques, job hunting and tips to maximize your university experience. There is also mentorship programs tailored to various degrees, providing invaluable guidance and support.

    Future Aspirations

My time at the University of Calgary has profoundly shaped my future aspirations. As I progress in my degree, I gain deeper insights into my career path. I plan to gain more experience through opportunities offered by the school such as co-op programs and working with professors on their research projects. These opportunities will help build my career and prepare me for the future.

The University of Calgary, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta (Districts 5 and 6).

The University of Calgary is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina. On this land and in this place we strive to learn together, walk together, and grow together “in a good way.”
