    Ophelia, Faculty of Kinesiology Student

Meet Ophelia: My Best Experiences being a UCalgary Student

I first came to UCalgary with no idea what it might hold for me—just that I loved studying human biology. Now, a year into my Kinesiology degree, I see the university in a whole new light, and it’s become the foundation for who I’m becoming.

My name is Ophelia, and I am in my 2nd year in the Faculty of Kinesiology. I was born and raised in Calgary, and knew for the longest time that I wanted to apply to the Kinesiology program here. By the end of my first semester at UCalgary, I fell into an even deeper fascination with the human body. The Kinesiology program at UCalgary is truly one of a kind, and I’m grateful every day for the chance to deepen my understanding of the human body while learning how to study at my best.

Through my time as an undergraduate student here, I have also discovered some incredible volunteering opportunities, like working with the Campus Food Hub to support students and help reduce food insecurity in the community, and the Thrive Center, where I moderate exercise classes for those living with and beyond cancer. I had never realized just how rewarding volunteering, helping others, and learning from their stories could be. I’ve learned that I feel my best when I know I’ve made someone smile and had a positive impact on their life.

When I first came to UCalgary, I knew I wanted to work hard and push myself to grow, but I wasn’t yet sure how to make the most of my university experience. The workshops offered through the Student Success Centre (SSC) and the Centre for Career and Personal Development (CCPD), helped me understand how I study, navigate extracurriculars, build resumes, and so much more.

Another major source of support for me has been the Scholars Academy. I was invited to speak on a student panel at New Student Orientation about technology and how to use it effectively throughout your studies. Sharing my experiences with other students was incredibly meaningful and strengthened my desire to support others in their undergraduate journeys. Through the Scholars Academy, I also stepped into the role of director for a service-learning project, where we deliver workshops to help youth build awareness around healthy living and nutrition.

The SU at UCalgary has given me the chance to expand my passion for helping others through clubs, where I serve as Co-President of the Breathe Easy Club, which promotes wellness among students through an intersectional approach. I’ve also had the honour of leading a Meditation Circle with the UCalgary Recovery Community, as well as hosting a Yoga event for students to unwind and recharge!

As a born-and-raised Calgarian, I love being able to study right here in the city, and I often take advantage of the beautiful areas around the University of Calgary. Some of my favourite hangout spots include Kensington, the Central Library, and the stunning Bowness Park, which is an area that has always been close to my heart growing up here.

As the classic children’s author Dr. Seuss said, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know.” If I could offer one piece of advice to future students, it would be to embrace the opportunities life gives you. Your knowledge is your most powerful tool, and it’s yours to grow in any way you choose. Always remember your worth.

I truly could not be more grateful for everything UCalgary has offered me, and I know this journey is just beginning. Big dreams can be challenging to chase, but embracing the personal growth along the way makes the experience all the more incredible.

The University of Calgary, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta (Districts 5 and 6).

The University of Calgary is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina. On this land and in this place we strive to learn together, walk together, and grow together “in a good way.”
