    McKinley, Bachelor of Nursing Student

Meet McKinley: My Most Memorable Experience as a UCalgary Student!

I wasn’t sure if the University of Calgary would live up to the hype, but after three years, I can say with confidence—it’s everything I hoped for and more! Moving away from my small town, I worried I’d get lost in the crowds, but UCalgary is surprisingly a tight-knit community, even in the middle of the bustling City of Calgary. My first three years in the Bachelor of Nursing program haven’t always been a walk in the park, but I’ve accomplished way more than I ever imagined, met incredible people, and loved every minute of it.

When I started my first year, I was pumped to finally live on my own in a new city that still felt close to home. Growing up in Canmore, I’d spent my whole life with the same tight-knit group of friends, which was comforting, but I was ready to branch out, meet new people, and dive into a fresh adventure.

I was lucky enough to call Kananaskis Hall home during my first year, where I met my best friend and roommate. Together, we tackled our first year of nursing school while discovering all the cool things UCalgary has to offer. There was never a dull moment—whether we were cheering on the Dinos at the Jack, uncovering hidden gems in the city, or just soaking in the full university experience.

Campus life has been one of the highlights of my time here. Living in residence is super convenient, with my classes and favorite study spots just a short walk away. The best part? Being able to dash back to my dorm for a quick nap or a warm lunch between classes—definitely a luxury I don’t take for granted. But more than that, living on campus has made it so much easier to meet new people and make lasting connections, something I’ll always be grateful for.

Getting involved was key to feeling at home, and it didn’t take long before I found my place. I started volunteering at the Writing Symbols Lodge in my first year and have been there ever since. Learning more about my Métis heritage, joining and leading various Indigenous clubs, and forming a close-knit community has truly made my university experience special. Connecting with my roots has helped me build friendships and networks that will last long after my time at UCalgary.

That being said, pursuing a Bachelor of Nursing has definitely been a challenge—but it’s also been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. It’s the perfect mix of hands-on learning, fascinating medical knowledge, and a whole lot of caffeine-fueled study sessions. I’ve gained confidence in my skills, built lifelong friendships, and experienced the thrill of clinicals, where everything I’ve learned truly comes to life. The challenges are real, but so are the rewards. Every day reminds me how lucky I am to be on this career path.

Clinical placements have been the highlight of my degree. Like every nursing student, they’re the part I always look forward to most. I’ve especially enjoyed my med-surg placements in cardiology and GI surgery, where I’ve not only thrived but found true joy in the work. These experiences have only deepened my passion for patient care and pushed me to keep learning and improving my skills.

Outside the hospital, nursing school has taught me resilience, adaptability, and the power of teamwork. Whether it's late-night study sessions, celebrating small wins, or supporting each other through the tough moments, I’ve learned that the people you meet along the way make all the difference. Being involved with the Undergraduate Nursing Society (UNS) as the Vice President of Indigenous Initiatives has been a huge part of my journey too—giving me the chance to connect with others, grow as a leader, and advocate for student needs.

Looking back on my time at UCalgary, it’s been a journey of growth, challenge, and discovery. I’ve found my place in a vibrant community that supports and inspires me every day. The friendships I’ve made, the knowledge I’ve gained, and the experiences I’ve had have made every challenge worth it. I’m so grateful for the opportunities I’ve had, and I can’t wait to see what’s next as I continue my nursing journey!

The University of Calgary, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta (Districts 5 and 6).

The University of Calgary is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina. On this land and in this place we strive to learn together, walk together, and grow together “in a good way.”
