Lillian Khanna, Haskayne School of Business Marketing Student

Meet Lillian: My Most Memorable Experience as a UCalgary Student

Hello! My name is Lillian and I’ve just completed my second year at the Haskayne School of Business in Marketing. I was born in Ottawa and moved to Calgary at an early age. I’ve known that the University of Calgary was the place for me since my first campus tour. I was in grade 10, super eager to start exploring universities because I loved academics and all things nerdy. I loved the energy on campus and the spaces, and I could really see myself here. That was when I set my sights on UCalgary and decided this was where I wanted to be.

Before my first year even started, I went to New Student Orientation, and it completely changed how I was feeling. I met so many people who were in the exact same boat as me — nervous, excited, unsure — and it made everything feel way less scary. My first year still had its challenges. I struggled with balance, tougher classes, and just learning how to be a university student. But getting involved helped more than anything. I volunteered for JDC West, became a Campus Tour Guide, and then helped with the UCalgary Strong Festival, Convocation, Orientation, You at UCalgary, and more! I definitely caught the volunteering bug. Being a full‑time student, working part‑time, and volunteering taught me discipline, gave me confidence, and helped me feel like I actually belonged here.

In my second year, I joined a club called Breathe Easy as the VP of Marketing. I almost said no because I was worried it would take too much time away from school, but saying yes ended up being one of the best decisions I’ve made. I found a group of friends who support me in everything I do, and I discovered how much I enjoy digital marketing and content creation. Now I’ve been offered the role of President, which still feels surreal. By volunteering as a Campus Tour Guide, I got to meet the team that helps future students learn about UCalgary. Eventually, I had the chance to work with them part-time, supporting the same events I once volunteered at. This month, I’m excited to be starting a new co-op role with the team, where I’ll be creating digital content and helping connect with future students online — something that directly connects to my passion for marketing. None of this would’ve happened without the people I met, the opportunities I said yes to, and the community I found here.

What’s been really cool is how full‑circle everything feels. I started as a nervous high school student on a campus tour, and now I get to help future students find their place here too. Every role I’ve taken on — volunteering, club leadership, working with the Registrar’s Office — has helped me grow in ways I didn’t expect. I’m excited for what’s next, and if I could give one piece of advice, it’s this: get involved. Say yes to things that scare you a little. You never know where they’ll lead. Go Dinos! 🦖

The University of Calgary, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta (Districts 5 and 6).

The University of Calgary is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina. On this land and in this place we strive to learn together, walk together, and grow together “in a good way.”
