Larissa, Bachelor of Social Work Student

Meet Larissa: My Most Memorable Experience as a UCalgary Student!

When I first arrived at the University of Calgary, ready to move into residence for my first year, I was filled with anticipation. I thought I had everything figured out—I was an Arts student enrolled in all the right classes, I had already mapped out where they were, and I had even made a few friends to sit with in class. I was prepared.

What I didn’t realize at the time, however, was just how many opportunities were waiting for me. Coming from a small town in the middle of nowhere Alberta, stepping into such a large and bustling university was both exciting and overwhelming. It wasn’t just about finding my classes anymore—it was about finding my place in a vast and vibrant community. Now, as a third-year student in the Bachelor of Social Work program, I feel incredibly fortunate to have found my place and my people, and to reflect on the journey that has brought me here.

I am incredibly grateful to have received the Chancellor’s Scholarship, which has not only provided crucial financial support but also connected me to a diverse and inspiring network of peers, mentors, and community leaders. Through the Ambassadors Club, I’ve had the privilege of volunteering with organizations like the Calgary Drop-In Centre and Inn from the Cold, where I’ve been able to give back to the local community in meaningful ways. The combination of these volunteering opportunities and the connections I’ve made through the Chancellor's Circle have profoundly shaped my sense of purpose and direction at the University of Calgary, and inspired me to continue serving others.

Being involved outside the classroom encouraged me to seek out more opportunities on campus, which encouraged me to apply to be part of the University of Calgary’s Scholars Academy. This program pushed me to grow academically and personally, offering countless opportunities to develop my leadership abilities and explore my academic passions. The mentorship and support within the Scholars Academy have been invaluable, especially when I applied for the Bachelor of Social Work program. Having a dedicated mentor from the Scholars Academy who happened to be an alumni as well was a game-changer. They provided advice and guidance, helping me navigate the application process and solidifying my commitment to pursuing social work as my career. The relationships I’ve built through the academy, combined with the leadership skills I’ve gained, have empowered me to take on new challenges with confidence and clarity, all while reinforcing my passion for social justice and community advocacy.

It's also important to have fun when in university as well - yes make sure to keep up on your readings but don't forget to nurture your creative or active interests as well! The University of Calgary has a vast array of intramural sports that you can join. I have really enjoyed being able to forget about school for a couple hours by going to play volleyball with my friends at the Jack Simpson gym. In addition to this, I also joined the Ski and Board club and have benefitted from their student discounted tickets to major ski mountains like Lake Louise! They also host weekend ski trips which are always a great opportunity to get outside and have some fresh air. These experiences have encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone and embody the UCalgary motto of “Start Something.” Throughout my university journey, I’ve learned to embrace change and take on new challenges, whether it’s trying a class I wouldn’t typically consider or volunteering in unfamiliar spaces. This openness has led me to discover new interests I never expected, from exploring the philosophy of ethics and morals to learning about global development strategies—areas I wouldn’t have ventured into without taking that leap.

As I continue my journey at the University of Calgary, I am excited for the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. Each experience—from the classrooms to the student clubs, from the scholarships to the volunteer work—has played a crucial role in shaping who I am today. These moments of growth have not only strengthened my academic and leadership abilities but also reinforced my commitment to making a positive impact in the community. I look forward to building on these foundations, striving to be a leader in the field of social work, and continuing to embrace the spirit of learning, service, and discovery that UCalgary has instilled in me.

The University of Calgary, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta (Districts 5 and 6).

The University of Calgary is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina. On this land and in this place we strive to learn together, walk together, and grow together “in a good way.”
