Starting at UCalgary: Nervous but Hopeful

Walking onto campus for the first time felt like stepping into a completely new world. I didn’t know anyone yet, and everything felt big, unfamiliar, and a little overwhelming. I was excited, but I also carried the quiet fear that comes with starting over — wondering how I would adjust, whether I’d find my place, and how long it would take to feel confident in a new environment.

But those worries didn’t last long. From the very first day, professors, TAs, and students greeted us with warmth and positivity. Their kindness made the transition easier, and slowly, I felt myself relaxing and settling in. One of the first classes I fell in love with was Economics with Professor Rob Oxoby. His teaching style, energy, and clarity made my first academic experience at UCalgary unforgettable.

Finding My People

During my Winter term, I met Maggie — one of the most meaningful friendships I’ve made here. One day, she gifted me traditional Chinese auspicious and religious items. It was such a thoughtful gesture, something I will remember for my entire life.

Moments like that made me realize how diverse, loving, and supportive the UCalgary community truly is. I didn’t just make friends here — I found family.

Why I Love Law & Society

Law & Society became the perfect program for me. I love learning about how laws shape everyday life, how society works, and how culture, morality, and governance influence people. My favourite classes have been with Professor Mark Machacek and Professor Harry Lucy — both of whom teach with passion, clarity, and genuine care for students. Their classes made me fall in love with my program even more.

Every lecture feels meaningful. Every discussion teaches me something new. This program has shaped how I think, how I see the world, and who I want to become.

My Dreams for the Future

I hope to attend Law school at the University of Calgary one day. I love this campus, this community, and this city. Being here feels right — like I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.

My dream is to become a lawyer and make a difference in people’s lives. And UCalgary is the place where that dream truly began.
