Enya, Bachelor of Nursing Student
Meet Enya: My Most Memorable Experience as a UCalgary Student!
I made one of the biggest decisions of my life when I moved across the world alone to pursue a Bachelor in Nursing at UCalgary. Over the past three years, I have built a home away from home by actively participating in campus events, engaging in student organizations, and forming meaningful connections with friends both within my faculty and across the university. I can confidently say that UCalgary has strengthened my personal and professional growth through leadership opportunities, hands-on learning, and a supportive community.

I remember missing orientation in my first year because my flight to Calgary was scheduled during the first week of classes. Looking back, I learned through my closest friends today how valuable orientation was for making those first connections in university. It’s a great opportunity to start building your community from day one! Not having that experience myself motivated me to become an orientation leader for new students to ensure they feel welcomed and supported as they embark on their first steps in university. Through my involvement, I not only got the chance to support incoming students, but I also gained some wins for myself. I built meaningful connections and formed friendships with students from other faculties throughout the entire process, expanding my sense of community in the university. It was such a memorable experience that I volunteered to be an orientation leader twice in a row, taking on a more senior role the second time around. For both years, I was able to grow in my responsibilities while continuing to make a positive impact on new students.

I also took on the position of Vice President of Communications for the Undergraduate Nursing Society (UNS) in my third year. What I loved most about this position was the opportunity to collaborate closely with every member of the team due to the nature of my role. I was able to expand my network with the leadership team of the Nursing Faculty and work alongside other passionate nursing student leaders.

The skills I gained through my extracurriculars have played a huge role in my development as a student nurse. Nursing goes beyond the clinical knowledge you learn in class as it also requires strong leadership and the ability to collaborate in various environments. The hands-on learning approach in our program, from practicing skills in labs to participating in Simulation Learning each semester, reinforced how important these skills are in real patient care. Being involved outside of my academics has not only shaped my university experience but has also helped me grow into a more well-rounded future nurse.

If there was one thing I did right in my first year of university, it was getting myself more involved with the campus community. Being the new girl in an unfamiliar city was initially intimidating, but getting involved helped me find my place and turn this new environment into a home. By choosing UCalgary, I chose to embrace the unknown and grow beyond my comfort zone.
