Dianne, Combined Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Bachelor of Arts in Gender and Sexuality Studies Student

Meet Dianne: My Most Memorable Experience as a UCalgary Student!

Four years into my undergraduate journey with two more ahead, I’ve never been more excited about what the future holds. Growing up in the Philippines, pursuing post-secondary education once felt like a distant dream. Today, being part of the UCalgary community has opened so many doors and is truly an experience that words like fortunate and grateful do not even begin to capture.

I began my academic journey within the mathematics program, drawn by my love for numbers and analytical problem-solving. However, what really stuck with me was the many experiences that allowed me to meet all the like-minded friends I made along the way and those I connected with who shared the same passion — whether through my roles as an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant or volunteering for the Girls Excel in Math (GEM) programs.
After my second year, I took GSXS 201: Talking Gender and Sexuality  with Joe Kadi, a course that quickly became one of the most impactful of my degree. Following this, I started taking more courses within the field and eventually applied for the combined degree program! Having the ability to customize my undergraduate degree and tailor it to what I was interested in has given me the broad foundation and breadth I need to support my future goals.

Despite what seems to be a contrasting combination of degrees, these programs have provided me with a unique interdisciplinary perspective, one that pushes me to think critically and holistically, dig dipper and continuously question the world around me with empathy.

Beyond the classroom, volunteering —  from getting involved with the Tri-Media particularly the Gauntlet, three programs run by Students’ Union Volunteer Services, and on-campus clubs like the Business Pride Club (BPC) —  is a big part of my UCalgary experience that has led to opportunities to lead, collaborate and grow further.

At the Gauntlet, I had the privilege of highlighting and bringing important stories and voices to the forefront both through my words and my photographs. As the Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator for two editorial terms, I also helped provide meaningful opportunities for folks who were interested in student journalism, just as I once was!

Over the past two years, I’ve also been part of the incredible 20-something team behind BPC, where we fly out students across Canada to participate in our annual National Pride in Business conference. All expenses covered from flights to accommodations to meals during the conference, these weekends of professional and personal development are spaces for mentorship, growth and authenticity. Through BPC, I’ve connected with so many queer folks who are doing amazing work, found friends and chosen family, and most importantly, had the space to show up as my full and true self.

Lastly, it was really through volunteering with programs like the Information Centre & Lost and Found, Campus Food Bank, and the Q Centre where I’ve met lifelong friends that continue to inspire me to show up with curiosity, compassion, and courage and pride every single day. These spaces have not only given me a deep sense of belonging but also have been continuous reminders of the importance of community care and collective growth, both of which I carry within and outside of academia.

As I head into the last two years of my undergraduate journey, I carry with me all these experiences, lessons, and friendships that have shaped and continue to shape the person I am today. Looking ahead as I complete my last couple of courses and my year long Co-op with the Recruitment Team as a Student Recruitment Ambassador, I get to reflect about my time at UCalgary, which so far has been nothing short of transformative. I am so excited to be a part of helping future students see themselves be a part of this community and to challenge, discover, explore, disrupt, create, build, and start something!

The University of Calgary, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta (Districts 5 and 6).

The University of Calgary is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina. On this land and in this place we strive to learn together, walk together, and grow together “in a good way.”
