Cassidy Thibodeau, Bachelor of Education
Meet Cassidy: My Most Memorable Experience as a UCalgary Student!
Growing up in the Maritimes, it is safe to say that my family and I never imagined I would one day leave the familiar shores of New Brunswick to start a new chapter in Alberta. Yet here I am, a third-year Bachelor of Education student at the University of Calgary within the Werklund School of Education, thriving in a place that has now become my second home.
Moving across the country to attend UCalgary was a leap of faith, but it was also a leap into possibility. Despite how scared I admittedly was, I found comfort in knowing that I would be part of a caring and supportive academic community. Whether through participating in orientation-week activities, consulting with program advisers, or discovering various student organizations during SU Club’s Week — the welcoming atmosphere at UCalgary gave me the confidence to embrace new opportunities and make meaningful connections!
Living on-campus in residence was a huge part of my university experience. As a first-year student, the transition to living on my own was both exciting and challenging. Thankfully, residence life introduced me to other students who understood exactly what I was going through. The residence staff, including my incredible Community Ambassadors (CAs), were always available to offer guidance, organize social events, and ensure that everyone felt safe and comfortable. This close-knit community made it easy to meet and form lifelong friendships. In fact, if it wasn’t for living on campus, I would have never met my current roommate and best friends whom I live with today.
Over the years, I have also taken part in a wide range of volunteer opportunities which have given me the chance to make a difference in the community. One of the most impactful experiences has been joining UCalgary’s Scholars Academy, where I serve as the co-chair of a learning-service project focused on creating events for children living with type 1 diabetes. This role has allowed me to combine my passion for education and community service, while working alongside other dedicated individuals to raise awareness and create a positive impact.
The biggest highlights for me at UCalgary are the countless ways to get involved. No matter your interests, there is always something to be a part of. For me, I decided to tryout and am proud to be an athlete on the cheerleading team. Having the chance to perform at Dino’s athletic events and represent UCalgary at competitions across Alberta has not only strengthened my physical abilities, but also deepened my sense of school spirit and pride.
If I could offer any advice to prospective students, it would be to make your degree your own. Studying at the Werklund School of Education has given me the flexibility to tailor my learning experience in ways that align with my personal interests and career aspirations. For instance, as someone deeply passionate about the well-being of students, I chose to pursue the embedded certificate in Mental Health and Resiliency alongside my Bachelor of Education. Integrating the courses from this certificate into my studies has allowed me to develop a deeper understanding of the importance of mental health and how it impacts learning and development. My choice to specialize in early childhood education has also played a significant role in shaping my educational journey, especially during my practicum placements, where I have had the opportunity to work directly with children from kindergarten to Grade 5. With the end of my degree in sight, these experiences have enhanced my understanding of how children learn, further fueling my desire to create an inclusive, engaging, and supportive classroom environment for young students.
Looking back, it is clear to me that UCalgary provided me with much more than just academic knowledge. This place has pushed me to grow both personally and professionally. It is a place of discovery, where I’ve been able to push past my comfort zone, take on new challenges, and grow in ways that have shaped me into the person I am today. While it’s not easy being away from home, my decision to choose UCalgary has shaped my future in more ways than I could have ever imagined.
Given the chance, I would gladly make the same choice again.
