Alice, Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology Student

Meet Alice: My Most Memorable Experience as a UCalgary Student!

Time really does fly from the moments in high school when I was applying to post-secondary, to being in my third year here at the University of Calgary. A few years ago, I was in your shoes exploring programs and unaware of the amazing research opportunities, volunteer positions, and recreational facilities that the Faculty of Kinesiology provides. I am proud to say I began my academic journey here at one of the top sport science schools in all of North America doing a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology!

The Kinesiology program at UCalgary has offered me so many unique classroom opportunities to enhance my degree. As a person whose learning style is heavily influenced by hands-on activities, my first-year courses in Anatomy and Physiology and Sports Medicine featured labs that allowed me to apply my skills with cadavers and injury prevention methods, furthering the connections of my class material to the real world. By my third year, I was able to take all this knowledge to use for a practicum placement, working directly with the faculty as a Communications Assistant. It was truly fulfilling being able to create projects with researchers, professors, and graduate students to gain a better understanding of all the careers that could be ahead of me.

Additionally, my core degree requirements really honed in on a holistic view of the body, from studying the functions of different organ systems to seeing the impact of physical activity on our health/lifestyle. These courses sparked a passion of mine to pursue a career in health care, opening my eyes to where I could make a meaningful difference in people's lives by helping them achieve better overall health and quality of life. The Bachelor of Science breadth allowed me to choose from a wide variety of classes to complete–similar to a “choose your own adventure”. As someone who is intent on applying to a doctoral program in Optometry, these options allowed me to have the freedom to complete graduate school requirements while still pursuing practical experiences in health and wellness.

Apart from day-to-day lectures, I wanted to immerse myself in the culture and community that UCalgary offered. By roaming Mac Hall during Clubs Week, I was able to find extracurriculars that best suited my interests. Joining the Pre-Optometry Students’ Association and Cerebral Palsy Ambassadors Club has helped me foster connections with students outside my own major and create new friendships, eventually gaining an executive position and taking on more responsibility. I was able to advocate for the needs of a vulnerable population by organizing events, raising awareness, and holding fundraisers with my fellow club members. The Kinesiology building in itself also offered plenty of things to do in my downtime between classes. Active Living held open gyms where I was able to play some volleyball with friends, drop in for a quick skating session at the Olympic Oval, or even try new things like bouldering.

Whether it’s the classes, hands-on experiences, or getting involved on campus, UCalgary has given me so many opportunities to grow. The Kinesiology program has helped me build a strong foundation, and I’m excited to see where everything I’ve learned will take me next!

The University of Calgary, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta (Districts 5 and 6).

The University of Calgary is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina. On this land and in this place we strive to learn together, walk together, and grow together “in a good way.”
