April 22, 2024 The MacEwan Student Centre, known across campus as “Mac Hall”, is a hub for many student supports. In this blog, you’ll be able to learn a little bit more about the different services available for students in Mac Hall. Faith and Spirituality Centre The University of Calgary’s Faith and Spirituality Centre (FSC) provides religious and spiritual supports for the UCalgary campus community. Whether you are looking for a space to practice your faith or are interested in learning more about different spiritual or religious beliefs, the FSC is available for all students to provide this support. Throughout the year, the FSC hosts a variety of events and programming to support students throughout their UCalgary journey. Through programs such as Peer Support, Yoga and Meditation, Sacred Space Visits and Workshops, students can find a community of individuals through the vast array of different options through the FSC. Along with this programming, the FSC hosts many different reoccurring events that take place throughout the different semesters. Taste of Tuesday is hosted once a month and introduces the campus community to different cultural recipes. You will learn how to create these delicious cultural meals and enjoy them with new friends. If you’re interested in learning and sharing amongst peers, DiversiTEA allows students a space to meet new students, choose from a variety of snacks and drinks and converse amongst peers. Along with other worship services and events, the Faith and Spirituality Centre aims to create a pluralistic community by encouraging students to learn more cultural and religious literacy, community building and social change. If you are interested in speaking with a Faith Representative, the Faith and Spirituality Centre provides students with different representatives to speak to on a one-on-one basis or in an event. With over 20 Faith Representatives, they are available to provide spiritual/religious support and guidance and engage in building communal opportunities for gathering, worship and reflection International Student Services International Students can connect with different supports through our International Student Services on a variety of different topics such as immigration, settling in Calgary and attending UCalgary. This is the one stop shop for advice and programs to support international students as they adjust to life in Canada and being a UCalgary student. ISS has Regulated Immigration Advisors available to help you who can find all the information you’ll need regarding applying for study permits, work permits, visas and other immigration question As an incoming international student, you may have questions about how life is different in Calgary. International Student Services can help you with many different events with topics related to adjusting to life in a new city. Questions related to housing, finding work, finances, language support and more, ISS has different advising opportunities and events to transition to life in Calgary and ensure that it is a smooth adjustment. Along with adjusting to a new city, international students are also adjusting to a new school in a different country. This is a unique experience that International Student Services wants to support. ISS provides students with programs and events that are aimed at directly at the unique needs of international students. These events can be in-person in the ISS space or online for students before they start their journey to UCalgary. International Student Services is located on the 1st floor of the MacEwan Student Centre. Writing Symbols Lodge The Writing Symbols Lodge is a space that encourages and supports the success of Indigenous students at UCalgary. From academic, to personal and cultural support, the Writing Symbols Lodge provides students with different support services and programs to prospective and current Indigenous students and aim create a space that is welcoming and supportive for the rest of the UCalgary community to learn and grow. Access these facilities on the 2nd floor of the MacEwan Student Centre and connect with new and old friends. The Red Lodge Student Lounge provides a space for students to meet, grab a bite to eat and hang out. Students can connect with other Indigenous students from around campus and find a network of supports to utilize throughout the school year. The Lodge also has different study spaces, a ceremonial room and a computer lab. At the Writing Symbols Lodge, students are also able to connect with a program advisor to help with program advising, course registration, academic processes, calendar information, financial needs and orientation events. Along with program advisors, the WSL offers academic supports as well! Students can get one-on-one assistance for academic support regarding study habits, managing stress, time management and more. Centre for Career and Personal Development The Centre for Career and Personal Development, also known as CCPD, is available to help students get the most out of their time at UCalgary and enhance their career and personal journey. CCPD runs many different programs throughout the year for students to enhance their school year such providing students with proactive study spaces or events. The Life Design Hub is an active student and community space that hosts Life Design events and programming to help students grow personally and professionally. When there aren’t workshops taking place in the Life Design hub, students are welcome to sit down and study or hang out! Programs run by the Centre for Career and Personal Development are open to all current UCalgary students and are designed to help students develop many integral life skills such as leadership, career and life skills. Students can grow their career experience and education, take place in leadership camps such as Camp LEAD, and meet new friends in the process. If you’re looking for more one-on-one support, CCPD has a team of advisors available to help you make the most of your time at UCalgary and become better prepared for your future career. Women’s Resource Centre The Women’s Resource Centre provides students across campus with a safe and supportive place to advance gender equality and build community through sharing, learning and teaching. Through different programs such as Peer Support, students can connect with a trained volunteer to assist and advocate for students. Peer supporters at the Women’s Resource Centre are available to provide support to students to make informed decisions, provide information and help students access resources. The Women’s Resource Centre also has a diverse event series to help students in an informative and fun way. Events such as Women’s Leadership Conference, Women Leader Speaker Series and 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence, the Women’s Resource Centre aims to provide safe spaces for learning and growth to all members of the campus community. The Women’s Resource Centre is located on the fourth floor of the MacEwan Student Centre and has a variety of different areas to hangout, have lunch, engage with peers and find supports. The centre has two safe haven rooms which allow students a private space for a peer support session, meditation, meetings and more.
