Application season is here, how do I apply? Karah Schmidtler | October 30, 2023 When does the application for Fall 2024 open? The Fall 2024 application for international applicants opened on August 15th, 2023, and opened on October 1st, 2023 for domestic applicants. The application will close March 1st, 2024, for domestic and international applicants. In addition to March 1st, 2024 being the last day to apply, it is also the last day to change your program choices within the application. It’s important to note that if you choose to change your application program choices after receiving an offer of admission, your offer of admission will be forfeited in order for us to complete another evaluation for your updated program(s) of choice. What should I do before I apply to the University of Calgary? Gather information by attending one of our many prospective student events! There’s a variety of events available such as our virtual Start Your Journey Webinar series, our Faculty Information Night or monthly On-Campus Advising Days. We encourage you to learn about all the different opportunities available to you as a UCalgary student as you plan to submit your application. Come tour campus! Our tour program takes you and your guests on a ninety-minute tour of campus showcasing key student resources, favourite study areas, and different classrooms. You will experience the energy and get a feel for the University of Calgary main campus! After your tour, we also offer an optional advising session where you can sit down with a member of our team to ask any additional questions about the University of Calgary, our programs, or the application process. Visit virtually! If you’re unable to attend a tour in-person, get to know campus from the comfort of your own home. Virtual tours are offered year-round and any additional questions you have can be supported through a virtual advising appointment with our team. How do I choose a program? When you apply to the University of Calgary, you can apply to up to two programs ranked as your first choice and second choice. We encourage you to explore our 250 programs and program combinations before selecting your choices to make sure they are the right fit for you. You can explore all our programs using the search tool to learn about admission requirements, program content and courses, and exciting opportunities and initiatives within the program and faculty. When selecting your first and second choice programs, it’s important to understand the admission process: if you receive an offer of admission for your first-choice program, this is the only offer you will receive, and your second choice will not be considered. We recommend you select your most desired program as your first choice. If you receive an offer of admission to your second-choice program, you will still be considered for your first choice as new grades are received. We recommend you choose a second-choice program with a lower estimated competitive average to give yourself the best chance of receiving an offer Once you know the programs you will apply to make sure you check the admission requirements for both programs. If you apply to a combined program, you will need to meet the admission requirements for both programs. Your combined program application will be reviewed for each half of the combined program independently. This means that you could receive an offer of admission to one half of a combined program while the other half continues to be reviewed. There are many ways that you can further customize your degree in an upper year that you can explore here. I think I’m ready to apply, how do I? When you apply, you will first want to check the application procedure for the location where you completed high school.
Once you get to the University of Calgary’s online application, you will fill out the application. It’s important to always ensure that you are providing accurate information about your academic history. This includes listing all institutions you have studied at, even if you will only be starting at the institution after you submit your application (for example, if you’re filling out the application in October and will be starting classes somewhere in January, we do want to know where you’re studying in January!). While you can return to your application to pay the application fee anytime before March 1, we suggest planning to pay the application fee when you initially apply. Applications are not reviewed until the application fee is paid and must be paid by the March 1, 2024 application deadline. The application fee is $125 for students who have only studied in Canada and is $145 for students studying outside of Canada. The fee can be paid via credit card as you submit your application or it can be paid through any of the methods here after your application has been submitted. What happens after I apply? After you apply, you’ll gain access to your Student Centre. This portal allows you to edit your application, upload documents, check the status of your application, change your program choices, accept your offer of admission, register for classes, and much more. You will want to keep an eye on your Student Centre for any to-do list items that need to be completed and you can review the status of your application by clicking the status link. You will find in your Student Centre the information on what is needed for your evaluation to continue. Your Student Centre also contains our scholarship and awards applications. This application opened on October 1st, 2023, and will be located in the “My Financials” tab. You can apply for awards and scholarships before you receive an offer of admission so make sure you do it early to take advantage of all the different opportunities that are available! How am I evaluated if I haven’t completed all of my grade 12 courses? For high school students, the first round of admission evaluations is based primarily on the grade 11 subjects that are required for your program. A small number of applicants will receive offers beginning in the middle of November. If you don’t receive an offer of admission at this point, you will automatically be re-evaluated after your Grade 12 first term grades have been received. The next round of evaluations starts in the middle of February and is based on the completed grade 11 and 12 courses that are required for each program. This is when the majority of qualified UCalgary applicants will receive an offer of admission. If you don’t receive an offer of admission by the end of February, we highly suggest you connect with us to discuss your application choices. If you connect with us before March 1, you will still have time to adjust your application choices and give yourself the best opportunity to be granted admission. Students will automatically be re-evaluated in the summer months once all final transcripts have been received. The final round of evaluations happens in July and is based on completed grade 12 courses that are required for each program. At this time of year, offers of admission are granted on a top-down basis to students with the highest averages first, depending on the spaces available. Offers made to students with courses in progress will be conditional. For international students, this conditional offer of admission is sufficient to be used to apply for a study permit. For students who have received a conditional offer of admission, your offer of admission will be finalized when the conditions outlined in the status link of your Student Centre are met. Conditional offers of admission require that you maintain the academic average you were admitted with, present all required high school courses for your program, and graduate from high school. Most conditional offers will have a deadline of May 1 to accept your offer and pay the $500 admission deposit. Accepting the offer and paying the deposit will secure your spot at UCalgary!
