Advanced Credit for Courses Completed in High School Programs

Are you a high school applicant and think you may be eligible for advanced credit? This article will walk you through all-things advanced credit here at UCalgary!

At the University of Calgary, students who have completed advanced-level courses from certain high school curriculums can be awarded university-level credit depending on the courses completed and grades achieved. This is your guide to understanding how advanced high school credit is granted at the University of Calgary.

    What is 'Advanced Credit'?

Advanced credit or advanced standing are the terms used to describe university-level credit that is granted for coursework completed during pre-university years. While students complete these courses within a high-school or secondary education program, the content of the courses has been assessed and determined to be at a higher, advanced level. To recognize this higher-level content, students are granted university-level credit that they can apply toward their University of Calgary degree program.

Advanced credit can be granted as individual course equivalents, as a block of credit or as a combination of both.

Students can be granted advanced credit from three recognized programs: International Baccalaureate (IB), Advanced Placement (AP) and General Certificate of Education – Advanced (GCE-A).

    International Baccalaureate (IB) Program

When applying to the University of Calgary as an International Baccalaureate student, there are two different ways you may be able to receive credit:

    Diploma holder:

If you are completing your entire grade 12 education in an IB diploma program, you are eligible to receive up to a full year of advanced credits (30 units) for the completed diploma. Within this 30-units, individual course equivalent credit will be awarded for Higher Level (HL) courses when a minimum grade of 5 is achieved; the remaining units will be granted as junior (year 1) level option credit. Your credits will be noted in your Student Centre as individual course equivalents, as well as a block of units for a total of 30-units. The only grades you’ll see connected to your advanced credit will be CR.

    Certificate holder:

If you are not completing the full IB diploma, but are taking some individual Higher Level IB courses, you will be eligible to receive individual course equivalent credit for these courses provided you achieve a minimum grade of 5.

Official IB transcripts are required to evaluate as an International Baccalaureate applicant and to grant advanced credit. A full list of Higher level IB courses approved for advanced credit can be found here.

    Advanced Placement (AP) Program

If you are completing Advanced Placements course(s) at your high school, you will automatically be eligible to receive individual advanced credit for approved courses provided you receive a grade of 4 or higher. If you receive advanced credit, the only grade you’ll see will be CR. You can consult our list of Advanced Placement courses and their University of Calgary individual course equivalent here.

General Certificate of Education - Advanced Levels

Students who complete specific General Certificate of Education courses at the Advanced level (GCE A-levels) will automatically receive individual advanced credit provided you achieve a grade of A, B, or C. To be granted credit, examination results must be verified by the appropriate examining board; attested or certified copies are not acceptable. A full list of GCE A level courses eligible for credit here.

If you receive advanced credit or placement, connect with your faculty about how it can be used in your degree program and how it impacts your course selection.

If you have any questions about advanced credit and the University of Calgary, reach out to your Region-Specific Recruiter or book a meeting with an advisor here.

The University of Calgary, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta (Districts 5 and 6).

The University of Calgary is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina. On this land and in this place we strive to learn together, walk together, and grow together “in a good way.”
